Cllr Ron Woodley, chair of the South Essex Active Travel Sponsoring Board, has welcomed the recent (9 May 2020) announcement by the Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, of a £250 million active travel fund to boost cycling and walking. He commented: “We have seen a major uptake in walking and cycling in recent weeks and months and therefore welcome the support from Government to encourage more people to travel by bike or on foot instead of jumping in the car for every journey.
New funding for bike lanes could make a massive contribution to helping people travel more actively and sustainably in south Essex, and we will be carefully reading and reviewing the full detail behind the announcement.
“Through our active travel initiative ForwardMotion we are already leading the way in getting individuals and organisations to consider greener travel options, such as cycling or walking. This announcement is an opportunity to further build on our existing cycling infrastructure and the work of ForwardMotion to encourage more people to change the way they travel.”
To help organisations and individuals who want to change the way they travel, ForwardMotion offers a range of different initiatives including:
– Personal travel planning
– Walking programmes
– Cycle training
– Cycle hubs
– Free cycle parking
– Journey buddies
– ‘How to’ videos on bike maintenance and cycling safely
