Cycle Training

We would like to get Essex residents on their bikes and using bikes for transport in and around Essex. If one of the main barriers for not cycling is lack of confidence, cycle training could help. We have a network of instructors that can help overcome that barrier, from learning to ride through to planning your journey for work or pleasure.

We provide Bikeability training for schools within Basildon. Schools book sessions during term time and your child will do this during the school day.

We also offer a range of Bikeability sessions for children, families, and adults to participate in.

Bikeability Family

We have developed Bikeability Family cycle training to help you get on your bikes. Whether you want further training for your child after they completed level 1 or 2 at school, or you as the parent need support, we’re here to help. This course is personalised to your family needs and completely free.

Bikeability Learn to Ride

These sessions are for children or adults who are unable to cycle. This includes everyone from children who are ready to make the move to riding with pedals, and adults who have never learnt to cycle. Sessions are taught 1:1 or 2:1, in an off road environment for a 45 min session.

Training for Adults

Cycling brings so many benefits for your social and professional life, health, and money saving, not to mention the positive impact on traffic and the environment. So why not give cycle training a try, especially as there is no charge. We offer a range of adult courses:

Learn to Ride: 45-minute session ( Max 4 sessions ). Requirements: A bike with 2 working brakes and a helmet.

Confidence: 2-hour bespoke session, allowing you to choose where you want to cycle too and what you want to learn. Requirements: A bike with 2 working brakes and a helmet.

Advance: 2-hour bespoke sessions including using the best riding position for any situation, riding on more complex roads. This might include busier roads, more complicated junctions, or faster roads with speed limits above 30mph. Requirements: A bike with 2 working brakes and a helmet.

Active Travel Toolkit for Schools

Active Travel Toolkit for Schools: Essex County Council, with the help from Active Essex are committed to optimising the levels of physical activity among school pupils across Essex. In doing so, we have produced an Active Travel Toolkit for schools to utilise and encourage families to travel in new ways to and from school.

Active travel not only presents the benefits of health as a source of physical activity but is safer for the environment and improves relationships and social inclusion.

Essex Cycle Grants

The Essex Cycle Grant is provided by Active Essex and Essex County Council to support organisations throughout the county to help more people to cycle. This can range from those needing support learning to ride or accessing a bike, to those who’re more confident wanting to explore more of Essex on two wheels. We want to increase local, inclusive cycling opportunities and target those who aren’t regular cyclists, or are new to cycling, to regularly take part. The money can be used to start up new activities or increasing the numbers attending existing activities.

Please visit the Essex Cycle Grant web page for further information, including grant criteria and how to apply.
