Project 49

Project 49 is a community-based resource run by Southend Care Ltd in Central Southend. It provides innovative services for adults with learning disabilities. Project 49 have an ongoing programme of events promoting healthy living and wellbeing to service users and staff alike.

Engagement

Changes to resident parking schemes and introduction of permit holder areas-only within Central Southend has made it more difficult for people commuting into town by car. There are only a few small public car parks that charge a £12 day rate.

We met with staff at Project 49 in April 2018 to discuss alternative travel options.

Results

A total of 22 members of staff talked to us and completed a personal travel plan (PTP) regarding their travel choices. All of these people were single car occupancy drivers. As part of the discussions, we outlined their options to get cycling, from the best routes to available training.

As part of the SEAT ForwardMotion project we offered subsidised month-long bus tickets to encourage people to make the change to public transport. We issued 13 of these subsidised bus tickets for participants that were willing to swap to bus travel.

Legacy

Remote PTP forms were left with the travel champion at Project 49 for staff that were interested in future advice. We have continued to receive these requests for help.
