We have won a £1.1 million government grant to help more residents and organisations who want to change the way they travel.

Following an announcement made on Friday 7 February by Chris Heaton-Harris, cycling and walking Minister, the funding for 2020/21 under the Department for Transport’s Access Fund will support a range of different initiatives including:

  • Personal travel planning – continued funding for trained travel advisers to advise employees, jobseekers and students on routes to work or study, and create bespoke travel plans to show what other options are available.
  • Walking workshops – funding to pay for the delivery of fun and interactive walking workshops in 2020/21.
  • Cycle training – funding the provision of free cycle training sessions for adults of any ability, delivered by a qualified instructor.
  • Cycle hubs – continued funding of the Tilbury and Mobile ForwardMotion cycle hubs to continue selling new and recycled bikes, bike parts and accessories, and providing free cycle checks, servicing and repairs and cycling advice.
  • Free cycle parking – funding for the provision of new cycle parking spaces at workplaces, schools/colleges and training centres.
  • Bike loan scheme – continued funding for 2020/21 of ForwardMotion’s affordable bike loan scheme.
  • Journey buddies – continued funding for travel companions if people feel nervous about taking a bus or cycling to work or study to help them get used to their new route.

Councillor Ron Woodley, chair of the South Essex Active Travel Sponsoring Board, commented: “We are delighted that the Government has recognised the great work of ForwardMotion and provided additional funding for the initiative. This extra funding will help residents and organisations to make changes to their travel behaviours that will not only benefit themselves, but also the south Essex community and beyond.

“ForwardMotion has already worked with thousands of residents across south Essex to change the way they travel. Over the last three years, it has helped organisations encourage their employees, students and trainees to use personal travel plans, take up cycle training and has even provided infrastructure such as cycle hangars.

“We encourage anyone who is looking to change the way they travel, or who would like to encourage people within their organisation to travel differently, to get in touch and see how ForwardMotion can help.”
