Engaging students in school assemblies

The ForwardMotion team has been busy reaching out to students across south Essex this month, speaking at a number of Year 11 school assemblies.

Recently, the team spoke to over 100 pupils at The Billericay School in Billericay, which is one of the biggest schools in Essex. Our travel engagement officers used an interactive presentation and quiz to help students think about their travel behaviours. The quiz encouraged car users to question their current transport choices and imagine a new way of travelling to school.

The team highlighted how making small alterations to a journey is a lot easier to sustain in the long-term and provided useful tips on how to make those changes, such as parking further away from school and walking to build in a few extra steps per day. Students discussed the benefits of travelling more actively, such as positive mental health, helping the environment and saving money. It was great to hear students’ opinions about transport in the area, the barriers they face travelling more sustainably and the changes they could put in place.

We received positive feedback from the session at The Billericay School and the sessions we have run at other schools. They have all commented on how well the topics we cover fit into the school curriculum, and how beneficial they are for students as life lessons.

In 2020, we aim to engage even more students and young people. Not only to help them think about the way they travel, but also to better connect them with the jobs, training and education opportunities within south Essex.
